Defaults and quotas

The information below describes the defaults for working in GCE.  Exceptions to the defaults or quotas can be requested by CELS users only via help@cels.anl.gov.  Users outside CELS are limited to the defaults (and no project space) unless sponsored by a CELS user or project.

Desktop, login, and compute nodes

  • Ubuntu LTS.
    • Currently 18.04, Ubuntu 20.04 will be available by mid 2020.
  • Network software managed by Modules (Lmod)

Home directories

  • /home/username or /nfs/gce/homes/username
  • Quota 50GB
  • Permissions 700 (drwx——)

Project/Group/Shared directories

  • /nfs/gce/projects/projectname
  • Default quota 100GB
  • Permissions 2770 (drwxrws—)
  • Only available for CELS projects

Shell

  • /bin/bash
  • /bin/zsh
  • /bin/tcsh

Default Desktop Hardware

  • 2019
    • Dell Precision 3430
    • Intel Core i3-8100, 4 Core, 6MB Cache, 3.6GHz w/ HD Graphics 630
    • 8GB DDR4 2666MHz
    • 1Gbit ethernet

Compute Node (standard)

  • 2X Intel Xeon Gold 6130 CPU @ 2.10GHz
  • 192GB DDR4 2666 MHz Memory (12x16GB Modules)
  • 1Gbit ethernet
